Why Eye Exams Are Important

Regular eye exams allow us to identify and diagnose glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy

Early diagnosis and treatment can help slow the progression of vision loss and reduce the risk of long-term complications. Eye exams can also detect subtle changes in your vision that may indicate other health problems such as hypertension or diabetes.

Common Eye Diseases & Conditions

Eye diseases can develop for numerous reasons, but we’re committed to detecting these issues as early as possible. Some of the most common eye diseases we look for include glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic eye disease.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye condition that can damage the optic nerve, leading to permanent vision loss if left untreated. There are 3 main types of glaucoma:

  • Open-angle glaucoma
  • Closed-angle glaucoma
  • Normal-tension glaucoma

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common version of the disease, and it can develop over years.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive condition that affects the central part of the retina, known as the macula. AMD is most common in those over 50 and is considered an incurable eye disease.

Without treatment, it can damage your central vision, which is used for reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens in the eye, blocking or impairing the passage of light into the retina.

Cataracts can cause blurred vision, glare, and decreased color perception. Cataracts are one of the leading causes of preventable blindness and are most common in people over 40 years old.

Cataract surgery is often necessary to correct this condition and restore sight.

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar levels cause damage to the blood vessels in the retina.

This can lead to swelling, leaking, and blockage of the vessels. In advanced stages, diabetic retinopathy can cause vision loss and blindness if left untreated.

Our Diagnostic Technology

Technology is what drives our approach to detecting eye disease. When you visit us for an eye exam, some technologies we may use can include optical coherence tomography, Optos retinal imaging, and visual field analysis.

Optical Coherence Tomography

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) works by using light to take cross-sectional images of the retina—like an ultrasound—allowing our team to detect abnormalities in the retina that may indicate early stages of eye disease.

It can help detect signs of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration.

Optos retinal imaging is a noninvasive technology used to detect and monitor eye disease.

It can take high-resolution images of the back of the eye, identifying the presence of eye diseases like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration.

Visual field analysis can help detect vision issues by assessing how well an eye can see peripheral objects.

Visual field analysis is often used to detect glaucoma, retinal detachment, and macular degeneration.

Managing Your Eye Health Through Nutrition

Proper nutrition can help manage your eye health and lower your risk for certain eye conditions.

Here at Littleton Eye Care Center, we offer supplements like VitreousHealth—which can help decrease floaters in your vision—to support your vision over your life.

In addition, our team can provide comprehensive education on how you can choose foods that are rich in essential vitamins and minerals for healthy eyesight.
