Many patients who complain about dryness and irritation have obstructed oil producing tear glands know as Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). The treatment of MGD involves clearing blockages in the Meibomian glands. LipiFlow is the only FDA-cleared in-office, inner lid treatment for MGD. LipiFlow uses controlled heat and pressure to unclog blocked Meibomian glands. This is known as thermal pulsation.

LipiFlow is the most recent and effective treatment for this form of dry eye. The device heats the glands for 12 minutes through the inner side of the eyelid and gently compresses the lids to empty the glands of the old thickened oily material.

Patients generally note a gradual improvement of their symptoms after several weeks after their glands have re-activated to more normal secretion.
